‘Not true’: Trump admin’s false claim walloped by House Dem

A Democratic lawmaker is calling out the Trump administration over claims regarding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding amid the ongoing government shutdown.

With SNAP funding set to lapse soon, Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) challenged the administration’s assertion that they could no longer fund the benefits. Writing on X, Clyburn stated, “The Trump Administration is claiming they don’t have SNAP funding for next month. That’s not true. SNAP has a contingency fund that could last well into November. If Americans don’t get their SNAP benefits, it will be because the Trump Administration decided to stop them.”

SNAP provides food assistance to 42 million Americans, including many in red states, and now faces uncertainty as the shutdown continues. According to The Hill, Republicans have pushed to use the lapse in food stamp benefits as leverage to pressure Democrats and end the stalemate.

Democrats argue that Republicans are attempting to dismantle federal programs supporting low-income Americans. They highlight Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” and point out that cuts to SNAP benefits were already forced over the summer.

As the deadline approaches, millions of Americans remain in limbo. The Hill reports that, in the best-case shutdown scenario, recipients may receive smaller payments to help cover grocery bills. However, in the worst-case scenario, they risk receiving no benefits at all.
