The NFL has introduced a new trend in 2025 that many fans find hard to embrace: late-starting Monday Night Football (MNF) games. This season, there have been multiple occasions where two games were played on Monday nights—a schedule NFL fans weren’t accustomed to seeing.
One of the most notable late-night games featured the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks, which didn’t kick off until 10:00 PM ET. Until this season, no NFL game had ever started that late. Fortunately for fans, Week 7 marked the final week with these doubleheaders on Monday nights.
In addition to the scheduling changes, the NFL welcomed legendary pass rusher JJ Watt as a new CBS color analyst, joining Ian Eagle in the broadcast booth. Watt recently called the Indianapolis Colts versus Los Angeles Chargers game, where the Colts secured a 38-24 victory over the Chargers.
Watt, a former Arizona Cardinal and Houston Texan, expressed his disapproval of the late Texan-Seahawks game. Speaking candidly, he admitted he nearly fell asleep during the broadcast. “Who scheduled this game? Eyelids are fighting for their life right now,” he said. Responding to a comment on social media, Watt added, “I’ve got a 4 month old and a 3 year old,” highlighting the challenge of staying awake for such a late kickoff.
This sentiment was shared by many fans, especially those on the East Coast. With a 10:00 PM ET start time, it’s likely that half the audience was asleep before the game even began. Starting an NFL game so late is clearly a deliberate choice, but it raises questions about whether the league should continue scheduling doubleheaders on Monday nights.
On the field, the Seahawks secured a significant win over the Texans. Houston’s offense struggled, managing to score only one touchdown and never seeming comfortable in Seattle. The Seahawks capitalized on early momentum and held on to the lead until the end.
However, Seattle needs to address its turnover issues. Despite building a 15-point lead, the team’s mistakes gave Houston multiple opportunities to come back. The Seahawks should have won the game more comfortably, but their turnovers kept the Texans in the fight.
As the NFL looks ahead, it will be interesting to see whether the league reevaluates the late-start MNF doubleheaders for future seasons. For many fans and players alike, the timing has proven to be a challenge—not just on the clock, but for maintaining enthusiasm and energy throughout the night.
