Gallup: Neither major U.S. political party more trusted, favored than the other

**New Gallup Poll Shows No Clear Dominance in Trust or Favorability Between U.S. Political Parties**

*Oct. 21 (UPI)* – A new Gallup Poll released Tuesday indicates that neither major U.S. political party currently dominates in trust or favorability among American voters.

The latest results from Washington-based Gallup’s annual governance poll, conducted September 2-16, reveal that U.S. voters feel the Republican Party has lost its edge in several key areas it’s typically known for. This shift comes as the shutdown in the Republican-controlled federal government extends into its 21st day.

According to the poll, Republicans experienced a three-point dip in favorability, dropping to 40% among U.S. adults. Meanwhile, Democrats currently hold a 37% favorability rating, down from 42% last year. Gallup attributes the Republicans’ weaker position mainly to fewer Americans preferring the GOP for its specific roles—not because of increased confidence in the Democratic Party to handle those issues.

Gallup’s survey also suggested that Americans tend to favor Republicans over Democrats on political values. However, fewer people trust the GOP to keep the United States safe, and voters rate both parties equally when it comes to maintaining national prosperity.

On the issue of protecting the U.S. from international threats, the gap narrowed, with about 48% of Americans viewing Republicans as better suited than Democrats on this topic, compared to 41% for the Democrats.

“Yet, while Republicans have lost ground this year on the key issues of maintaining prosperity and national security, Democrats have seen no corresponding gains,” Gallup stated in its release. The organization added that Americans remain broadly dissatisfied with both major parties, with neither viewed favorably by even half of the public.

Gallup also noted that since August 2020, at least half of Americans have viewed both parties unfavorably in every Gallup reading.

When it comes to key issues, immigration and fiscal policy were the top areas where people praised Republicans. On the other hand, abortion and pro-choice issues, healthcare reform, environmental matters, as well as LGBTQ+ and civil rights issues, were most commonly associated with Democrats.
