South Carolina Gamecocks lose 4-star pass-catcher commit after losing to Oklahoma

Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks have lost a talented prospect in the 2026 recruiting class following their recent loss to the Oklahoma Sooners. That player is tight end Jamel Howse, who announced his decommitment from the program on Sunday, according to On3 insider Hayes Fawcett.

Howse had pledged to South Carolina since last October and was ranked as the No. 14 tight end in the 2026 class by Rivals. This year, during his senior campaign at Newberry High School, Howse has recorded impressive stats, catching 32 passes for 392 yards and four touchdowns. His standout performance earned him a selection to the Shrine Bowl, making his decision to decommit a significant loss for the Gamecocks.

As a recruit, Howse is regarded as a three-star tight end with an 88 score on 247Sports. He ranks as the 11th-best player from the state of South Carolina and the 32nd-best tight end nationally. His composite score of 0.9086 places him in the four-star category, ranking sixth in the state, 13th among tight ends, and 282nd in the country.

### What Lies Ahead for Shane Beamer and South Carolina

Losing a promising tight end like Jamel Howse is undoubtedly a tough blow for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks’ 2026 recruiting class. Meanwhile, South Carolina is navigating a challenging 2025 season, currently holding a 3-4 record.

Their recent 26-7 loss to the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners puts the team in a difficult position as they fight for bowl eligibility. The Gamecocks have struggled with consistency, averaging 20.1 points per game offensively while allowing 20 points per game on defense.

At quarterback, LaNorris Sellers has yet to make a significant impact, throwing for 1,134 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. Running back Rahsul Faison leads the ground game with 64 carries for 282 yards and three touchdowns.

In the receiving corps, Vandrevius Jacobs and Nyck Harbor are leading the way. Jacobs has caught 21 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns, while Harbor has 17 receptions for 278 yards and two touchdowns.

Currently, South Carolina sits near the bottom of the SEC standings, ranked 12th out of 16 teams. They are positioned just above Mississippi State, Arkansas, Auburn, and Kentucky.

The Gamecocks now prepare for their next matchup at home, where they will host the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide on October 25 at 3:30 p.m. ET. It will be a critical game as South Carolina looks to turn its season around and build momentum moving forward.
