Ford issues record 103 safety recalls in 2025 with four months still remaining in the year

Ford Motor Company has issued the most safety recalls among automakers in 2025, with more than 103 alerts, according to a report from Kelley Blue Book. With a third of the year remaining, Ford has already surpassed its previous annual record of 77 recalls.

If a vehicle fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards due to a safety-related defect, manufacturers are required to notify consumers of the issue. These recalls are intended to address safety problems before they cause harm. Typically, manufacturers initiate recalls to stay ahead of potential fines and driver-safety issues. However, the federal auto regulator—the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the Department of Transportation—can also issue vehicle recalls based on publicly submitted cases of potential safety concerns.

Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader, told FOX Business that he usually views recalls as a sign that the system is working properly. “Most of the recalls today are voluntary and automakers are very rarely compelled by legal action or the government,” he said.

However, Moody expressed concern over Ford’s record number of recalls. “As increasingly complex vehicles become the norm, Ford has stumbled with regard to quality,” he explained. Moody also referenced earlier Kelley Blue Book reports showing Ford led the industry in recalls in both 2022 and 2023.

The following year, the NHTSA imposed a $165 million civil penalty on Ford—the second-largest in NHTSA’s history. The fine came after an investigation found that Ford failed to recall vehicles with defective rearview cameras in a timely manner and did not provide accurate and complete recall information as required by the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Ford told FOX Business that its commitment to vehicle quality and customer safety “is paramount.” The company stated that the high number of recalls reflects its intensive strategy to quickly identify and fix hardware and software issues, going the extra mile to protect customers.

In the past two years, Ford has more than doubled its team of safety and technical experts. The company highlighted, “We can and do find issues existing in earlier model years, including those not even reported.”

“We will not compromise our responsibility to all our customers, not just those buying new vehicles,” Ford said. The automaker believes that this approach will lead to systemic and lasting positive change, helping Ford reach world-class levels for quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Moody acknowledged that Ford’s more rigorous testing system partly explains the increase in recalls but emphasized, “It’s not the full story.”

Looking at Ford’s stock, the ticker shows:

**Ticker:** F | **Security:** Ford Motor Co. | **Last:** $11.93 | **Change:** +0.18 (+1.53%)

“There’s no possible way that a company like Ford intends to issue more recalls,” Moody said. “The negative publicity alone makes that an unreasonable strategy.”
