**DGCA Encourages Airlines to Add Flights to Keep Ticket Prices in Check During Festive Season**
As passenger demand surges during the festive season, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken proactive steps to ensure ticket prices remain reasonable. This move aims to keep air travel affordable amid the heightened travel activity witnessed during this period.
### Flight Additions to Cater to High Demand
The DGCA has asked airlines to deploy additional flights throughout the festive season, which in India spans from Dussehra to Chhath. This period typically experiences a significant spike in passenger traffic, leading to higher ticket prices if supply does not keep pace with demand.
IndiGo plans to operate approximately 730 additional flights across 42 sectors. Similarly, Air India and Air India Express will collectively add around 486 flights covering 20 sectors. SpiceJet will also contribute by operating 546 extra flights across 38 sectors.
### Airline Response and Monitoring
A senior DGCA official stated, “We are ensuring that airlines operate enough flights to meet the surge in demand and that ticket prices remain reasonable during the festive period.” The authority will closely monitor airline fares and flight capacities to protect passengers’ interests and support smooth travel during the busy season.
### Rising Fuel Prices Pose Challenges
One key factor that could influence ticket prices is the increasing cost of Air Turbine Fuel (ATF), which accounts for over 50% of an airline’s operational expenses. Over the past four months, fuel prices have risen by approximately ₹12,000 per kiloliter. Although a discount of ₹1,300 was provided last month, prices continue to climb steadily, with increases ranging from ₹100 to ₹1,000 at a time.
This upward trend in fuel costs is expected to impact ticket pricing, potentially offsetting some of the benefits of added flight capacity during the festive season.

By increasing flight availability and monitoring fares, the DGCA strives to balance rising operational costs with passenger affordability, ensuring a more convenient and economical travel experience this festive season.
