**What’s the Story?**

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that a judicial commission will be set up to investigate the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The commission will be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court.

“We will form the commission tomorrow,” Sarma stated during a Facebook Live session.

Zubeen Garg, aged 52, reportedly drowned while swimming in Singapore on September 19.

**Ongoing Probe**

The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently conducting an investigation into Garg’s tragic death. So far, over 60 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the Northeast India Festival where Garg was scheduled to perform.

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case and have been placed in police custody for 14 days each.

**Information Submission**

Addressing the public, Chief Minister Sarma remarked, “Now, those who had shared different information related to Zubeen’s death on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, it is their duty to submit affidavits in front of the commission.”

He further urged the members of the Assam Association of Singapore, who accompanied the singer on the day of his death, to come forward and provide their statements.

**Additional Investigation**

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department are also likely to join the Assam Police in investigating alleged financial crimes and hidden property transactions involving Shyamkanu Mahanta.

According to sources, officials from these departments have already visited the CID headquarters to probe a financial scam linked to Mahanta. “They are likely to join the probe with CID, and a formal decision may come very soon,” the source added.

**Investigation Details**

During raids at Mahanta’s residence on September 25 and 26, the CID recovered several incriminating items and documents. These included multiple PAN cards registered under the same firm, around 30 stamp seals belonging to various companies and government officials, and paperwork related to several benami (proxy) properties.

Meanwhile, Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima, has given her statement before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) and submitted all relevant documents. She expressed her strong desire for justice to be served as soon as possible.

The investigation into the tragic demise of Zubeen Garg continues as authorities work to uncover the truth behind the incident and related financial irregularities. The formation of the judicial commission is expected to bring clarity and ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry.
