In a major leadership shake-up, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian ODI team. Gill takes over from Rohit Sharma, signaling a fresh direction for Indian cricket’s white-ball leadership. Alongside this change, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain for India’s ODI side, selected over notable contenders like KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah.

### Iyer’s Role in the Leadership Group

Shreyas Iyer’s elevation to the vice-captaincy cements his formal position within India’s white-ball leadership group. Although he had previously been involved on a stand-in basis, this new role will see him play a key part in supporting Shubman Gill during 50-over matches.

The upcoming ODI series against Australia, beginning on October 19, will be Iyer’s first assignment as a part of Team India’s official leadership.

### Iyer’s Case Strengthened by Recent Performances

Iyer’s recent impressive form, especially during India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year, has strengthened his leadership credentials. He accumulated 243 runs across five matches at an average of 48.60, including two half-centuries.

While his strike rate of 79.41 was relatively moderate, it is worth noting that all matches took place in Dubai—conditions that suppressed high scores. Notably, Iyer was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament after New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra (263 runs).

### Outstanding ODI Statistics

The Mumbai-born batter has been in sublime form in ODIs this year, scoring 424 runs from eight games at a striking average of 53.00, which includes four fifties.

Overall, Iyer’s ODI career boasts 2,845 runs from 70 matches, at an average of 48.22 and a strike rate of 100. He has scored five centuries and 22 fifties so far in this format.

### Stellar Record in ICC ODI Events

Iyer truly shines on the big stage. During the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, he amassed 530 runs, finishing as the tournament’s seventh-highest run-scorer with an outstanding average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.24. He became the first middle-order batter to surpass 500 runs in a single World Cup edition.

Adding his Champions Trophy 2025 exploits, Iyer now has 773 runs from 16 ICC ODI matches, averaging 59.46. His tally includes five fifties and two centuries in ICC tournaments.

### IPL 2025 Heroics: Leading PBKS to the Final

Iyer also showcased his leadership and batting prowess in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Under his captaincy, Punjab Kings finished as runners-up. He enjoyed a dream season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at an average of 50.33 and hitting six fifties.

His explosive strokeplay was evident with 39 sixes— the most by any captain in a single IPL edition. Iyer’s strike rate of 175.07 ranked third among batters with over 600 runs in the tournament.

Shreyas Iyer’s appointment as India’s ODI vice-captain reflects his consistent performances and growing stature as a leader. As he partners with Shubman Gill, Indian cricket fans can look forward to a dynamic new leadership duo steering the team in the upcoming international fixtures.
