Hours later, local prosecutors reported that a 71-year-old man was found dead in one of the wrecked carriages. The site of the attack is approximately 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Russian border, according to Al Jazeera.
In a message posted on Telegram, Artem Kobzar, the acting mayor of Sumy, confirmed the situation: “There are injured passengers. Rescuers, medics, and all emergency services are working at the scene.”
Moscow has intensified its air attack campaign on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, targeting it almost daily over the past two months. This latest attack on the train comes just one day after Russia launched its biggest overnight air attacks on several Ukrainian regions.
