The U.S. Capitol remained quiet on the second day of the government shutdown, as no votes were scheduled in either chamber in observance of Yom Kippur.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) held a press conference at 10 a.m. EDT outside his office, accompanied by members of his leadership team, in an otherwise largely empty House.
Meanwhile, the Senate is scheduled to meet at noon. However, according to a Senate GOP aide, no formal meetings are planned for the day. Some senators are communicating by phone during the holiday.
The next Senate votes are set for Friday, when the upper chamber will vote on a motion to advance the alternative Democratic continuing resolution to fund the government until October 31. The Senate will also vote on a procedural motion to advance the House-passed measure to fund the government until November 21.
Both motions require 60 votes to pass, but both are expected to fail.
Government funding expired at midnight on October 1, leading to the current shutdown.
