Shares of media and entertainment companies took a significant hit on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States. This abrupt policy shift is expected to have a major impact on the Indian film industry, which exports films in multiple languages to the American market.

**Impact on Indian Film Industry**

The US serves as one of the largest markets for Indian films, thanks to its substantial Indian diaspora. Indian movies, produced in a variety of languages, enjoy widespread popularity among this diverse audience. According to a 2017 Forbes report, Indian language films have become a lucrative business in the US and Canada, often grossing over $8 million and sometimes exceeding $10 million.

Following Trump’s announcement, the Nifty Media index dropped over 1%, with seven out of ten major media companies trading in the red. Prime Focus was the hardest hit, plummeting 5% to hit the lower circuit at ₹175.94. Other notable declines included PVR INOX, which fell up to 3% to ₹1,072.10, and Mukta Arts, which dropped nearly 2% to ₹68.

**Details of the Tariff Announcement**

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump expressed his frustration with foreign countries, stating: “Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’” He emphasized that a 100% tariff would apply to any and all movies made outside the US.

**Enforcement Concerns and Industry Questions**

Analysts have raised concerns about the practicality of enforcing such tariffs, especially given the increasing digital distribution of movies and TV shows. There is also uncertainty about how the new policy will affect American films shot in foreign locations.

This announcement follows other protective trade measures by the Trump administration, including new tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products not manufactured domestically.

As the situation develops, stakeholders in the global media and entertainment industry await further clarity on the implementation and long-term implications of these tariffs.
