Shares of media and entertainment companies tumbled significantly on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on movies made outside the United States. This unexpected move is set to have a major impact on the Indian film industry, which exports films in multiple languages to the American market.
The US is home to a large Indian diaspora, making it one of the biggest markets for Indian films. These films enjoy immense popularity among Indian communities across the country. Consequently, the announcement triggered a sharp decline in Indian media stocks, with the Nifty Media index falling over 1% and seven of its 10 constituents trading in the red.
Among the hardest hit was Prime Focus, which dropped 5% to hit its lower circuit at ₹175.94. PVR INOX shares fell nearly 3% to ₹1,072.10, while Mukta Arts declined close to 2%, settling at ₹68.
### Trump’s Tariff Announcement
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’” He added that he would impose a 100% tariff on any and all movies produced outside the US.
### The Significance of the US Market for Indian Films
Indian cinema produces movies in several languages, catering to a diverse audience in the US. According to a 2017 Forbes report, Indian language films have become a lucrative business across the US and Canada, with typical earnings exceeding $8 million and occasionally surpassing $10 million.
### Enforcement Challenges Ahead
Industry analysts have raised concerns about how these tariffs will be enforced, especially given the digital distribution of movies and TV shows. The new tariff regime also raises questions about the status of US films shot in foreign locations and how they will be affected.
This announcement comes shortly after the Trump administration imposed new tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products not manufactured in the US, signaling a broader push to encourage domestic production across various industries.
