Delhi BJP gets permanent address after 45 years: PM unveils 5-storey building

After a wait of 45 years, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finally got its permanent address on Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg on Monday. The five-storeyed, state-of-the-art building was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a function attended by BJP President JP Nadda, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Ministers, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, and other senior leaders and functionaries.

The Delhi BJP office will begin shifting from its current location at Pandit Pant Marg to the new building around Diwali, news agency PTI reported, quoting party leaders. Currently, BJP operates from a bungalow near Gurudwara Rakabganj in Lutyens Delhi.

“I thank the central leadership for this permanent office of the Delhi BJP that functioned from Ajmeri Gate Chowk, Pant Marg for many years. This soothes the pain felt by the party workers in the absence of a permanent office building,” said Sachdeva.

The new office incorporates elements of South Indian architecture, featuring high pillars at the entrance and on the facade, PTI reported, quoting BJP leaders. Located on an 825-square-metre plot, the five-storeyed building has a built-up area of 30,000 square feet, including the facade, entrance, and pillars. The structure is environment-friendly and equipped with modern amenities, the leaders added.

The building includes two basements for vehicle parking. The first floor houses an auditorium with a capacity of 200 people, while the second accommodates offices of the party morchas and cells, a senior Delhi BJP leader told PTI. The third floor has offices of the Delhi BJP Vice-Presidents, general secretaries, and other office-bearers, along with a conference room with seating for 50 and a library. The fourth floor is reserved for the offices of the Delhi BJP President, general secretary (organisation), and in-charges, and also features a meeting room for 15-20 people. A press conference hall is located on the ground floor.

BJP’s precursor, the Jan Sangh, operated from the crowded Naya Bazar area in old Delhi before 1975. It then shifted to the second floor of a rented building at Ajmeri Gate Chowk in 1975, said Delhi BJP media head Praveen Shankar Kapoor.

After the BJP was formed on April 6, 1980, the Delhi office continued to function from Ajmeri Gate Chowk till 1989. The office briefly moved to 20, Rakabganj Road before the 1989 Lok Sabha polls, and later shifted to its current location at 14, Pandit Pant Marg — a bungalow allotted to party leader Madan Lal Khurana, elected MP from the Sadar Bazar seat.

The party had been making efforts for a permanent office for a long time, but various delays postponed the construction. Finally, the land for the new office was obtained in 2022-23, Kapoor said. Construction work began in 2023 after a Bhumi Poojan ceremony presided over by BJP president JP Nadda.

After a long wait of 45 years, the Delhi BJP now has its permanent office building, Kapoor added.
