INNA BETTA, Miss. (AP) — Athean Renfro ran five yards for the winning touchdown with 1:18 left in the game, lifting Texas Southern to a 23-20 comeback victory over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night.
The Tigers recovered a fumble with 6:27 remaining. On a critical 4th-and-4 play, Tigers quarterback KJ Cooper threw the ball while being tackled, but officials ruled his knee was down before the throw, resulting in a turnover on downs. Mississippi Valley State took over, leading 20-16, with 3:25 left to play. However, the Delta Devils’ offense was stopped at midfield on the ensuing drive.
With just under two minutes remaining, Cooper and the Texas Southern offense regained possession. Cooper completed a deep 48-yard pass to Trenton Leary, bringing the ball to the 5-yard line. Shortly after, Renfro pushed through for the game-winning touchdown, putting the Tigers ahead 23-20 with 1:18 remaining.
Renfro finished the game with 80 yards on 21 carries, while Cooper completed 13 of 20 passes for 165 yards. On the other side, Mississippi Valley quarterback Josh Brown threw for 252 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Kerrick Ross in the second quarter.
Texas Southern (1-3, 1-1 SWAC) has an 8-5 all-time record against Mississippi Valley State (0-4, 0-1 SWAC). The Tigers’ last win against the Delta Devils came in 2018.
