Princess Anne Addresses Challenges Faced by Naval Families During Visit to Naval Children’s Charity
Princess Anne made an unplanned speech at the Naval Children’s Charity in Portsmouth, where she addressed the unique challenges faced by families of Royal Navy personnel. This visit marked her first to the charity since taking on the role of patron, a position she inherited from her late mother, Queen Elizabeth.
During her tour of the facilities, the Princess Royal focused on the charity’s work supporting the wellbeing and development of young people from Naval families. She acknowledged the particular difficulties that families of those who serve in the Royal Navy often experience.
“This is about families of people who serve, and that is a difficult relationship sometimes, but it needs to be remembered and is at the forefront of what you do,” she said.
Princess Anne went on to highlight the additional strain placed on these families due to their scattered locations. “When you’re as scattered as the Naval families are, that can be a real challenge in a way that nobody else quite has,” she explained.
Expressing her gratitude, she added, “Thank you for maintaining that link,” offering heartfelt recognition of the crucial work carried out by the charity.
The Princess Royal formally became patron of the Naval Children’s Charity in March, succeeding her late mother, who had supported the organization for an impressive seventy years. The charity provides vital aid to thousands of young people annually, including crisis grants for families facing illness, disability, or mental health challenges. It also offers wellbeing resources and educational opportunities through its Life Chances Programme.
Princess Anne’s engagement in Portsmouth was part of a busy day that also included the opening of an education centre at Victoria Barracks on the Isle of Wight and an appearance at the Southampton International Boat Show.
