Call them wandering mystics, if you will. But in everyday language, they are defined by one mighty compelling word: malang.
The malangs don’t have a place they’d call home. As such, they are almost nomadic, often camping in small groups next to shrines. They may associate themselves with the Sufis and shrines they visit, forming a unique spiritual bond.
They actively participate in festivals, known as Urs, and may also perform dhamal, a devotional dance that expresses their devotion and joy.
Since they don’t seek material gains and have no steady source of income, they rely on langars at the shrines to get their daily meals. This simple lifestyle reflects their deep spiritual commitment and detachment from worldly possessions.
