DOT: June Air Cancellation Rate Increases

The June cancellation rate for U.S. carriers was 1.8 percent, up from 1.3 percent a year prior and 1.1 percent reported in May, according to the latest U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report.

In June, U.S. carriers operated nearly 662,300 flights, marking a 3 percent increase year over year and slightly more than the 660,000 flights operated in May 2025.

The U.S. carriers with the lowest cancellation rates in June included Hawaiian Airlines (0.2 percent), Allegiant Air (0.4 percent), and Southwest Airlines (0.6 percent). On the other hand, airlines with the highest cancellation rates were American Airlines network (3.1 percent), Frontier Airlines (3.1 percent), and Delta Air Lines (2.1 percent). It is important to note that networks include branded codeshare partners.

During June, U.S. airlines handled 42.9 million bags, down from 44.6 million bags handled a year earlier and slightly higher than the 42.1 million bags handled in May. The mishandled baggage rate for June was 0.57 percent, nearly unchanged from 0.58 percent reported in June 2024, but up from 0.49 percent in May 2025.

The Department of Transportation received more than 8,100 submissions in June, including complaints, inquiries, and opinions. This represents a decrease from nearly 8,400 submissions a year earlier, but an increase from nearly 6,600 submissions in May. U.S. airlines accounted for 77.9 percent of these submissions, foreign carriers 19.3 percent, and travel agencies 2.2 percent.

Submissions related to the 10 largest reporting U.S. carriers and their branded networks decreased 2.5 percent year over year to more than 6,100.
