Chase Chrisley Says He Turned to Alcohol During Parents’ Prison Time: ‘I Didn’t Know How to Process My Emotions’

**Chase Chrisley Opens Up About Coping with His Parents’ Prison Time for Financial Crimes**

Chase Chrisley, 29, the son of Todd and Julie Chrisley, recently opened up about the challenges he faced while his parents served time in prison for financial crimes. He appeared alongside his mom and dad on the Thursday, September 18 episode of *The Tamron Hall Show* to share his experience.

“Our family’s really close,” Todd said in a clip shared with PEOPLE ahead of the episode’s airing. “When you lose the backbone of your family, there’s nothing that can prepare you for that. Did I handle it the best way? No. I learned a very valuable lesson, I did,” the reality star continued.

Todd, 56, admitted he was not surprised that Chase turned to drinking while he and Julie, 52, were incarcerated. “Well, I have never had alcohol,” Todd told Hall. “So it’s never been around us.”

According to Todd, Chase’s struggle with alcohol began before his parents’ prison time. “I think around 17 or 18, and it continued,” Todd explained. “He would go out, or he would go to the Bahamas or wherever, and I said, ‘You need to stop with this drinking. I don’t know where it’s coming from, but there’s no good to come from it.’”

Todd went on to say that everything happens for a reason and that it took Chase getting a mugshot for him to realize, “Okay, maybe daddy was right.”

In January, Chase was arrested for simple battery after being named a suspect in a bar assault incident.

Chase told Hall that hearing his father’s words made him realize Todd was right, but added, “I’ve always had to learn the hard way, and this was no exception.”

The *Chrisley Knows Best* alum admitted that his drinking worsened when his parents were indicted on federal charges of tax evasion, fraud, and conspiracy. Todd and Julie were found guilty on all counts in June 2022 and sentenced to a combined 19 years in federal prison. After serving over two years, the couple was pardoned by President Donald Trump in May 2025.

“I just didn’t know, really, how to process my emotions and how I was feeling,” Chase continued during the episode. “I just turned to drinking.”

The audience applauded as Chase shared that he is now sober. He also reiterated that he learned “a valuable lesson.”

In a separate appearance on the *Chrisley Confessions* podcast on Tuesday, September 16, Todd vowed to always be there for his children moving forward. “I’m not going to ever walk away from one of my kids. I’m not going to walk away from Chase when he’s down, when he’s having an issue,” he said. “I’m not losing my child to anything.”
